Ordering Reports by Phone
Each of the major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, Innovis, and Trans Union) allow consumers to order their credit reports by phone. Ordering by phone has the advantage of being a quicker and sometimes easier process than writing a request. You can call anytime and receive contemporaneous confirmation that you will receive your report. Even though though ordering by phone is convenient, it comes with some serious downsides.
What Are the Complications of Ordering by Phone?
Even though the credit reporting agencies offer you the opportunity to order your credit report by telephone, these disputes present problems for consumers who may need to dispute errors on those reports. First, and most importantly, unless you record your conversation, you will not have any documentary evidence that you have requested that report or when. The credit bureaus are required to provide with a minimum of one free disclosure per year, and they must provide that report within 30 days of receiving the request.
Even though consumers are entitled to these reports, the bureaus often deny requests for reports, claiming that they cannot confirm the consumer’s identity. Leaving them to reorder and wait another 30 days. In fact, many consumers may request two and three times before giving up. For these consumers, the only way to get a report is with a lawsuit. And a lawsuit will require proof that the report has been requested.
Second, if the credit bureaus are unable to verify the consumer’s address, they may need to submit proof of ID by mail. This places consumer no better off than if they had ordered by mail in the first place.
These issues cause militate in favor of requesting your report by mail. You can use our free, automated request letterto order your reports from the major credit reporting agencies.
